Food Truck Living
I wanted to learn how to create a story from a series of images so I decided to attend a workshop taught by Nevada Weir, a well respected photojournalist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During my youth I worked on bread routes during summer breaks in high school and in college. I enjoyed serving many of the restaurants and getting to know the owners and workers. After trying a few other story ideas I learned that Santa Fe had a vibrant food truck scene. I thought it would be interesting to spend 3-4 days visiting and hopefully photographing the people who worked the food trucks. I tried initially shooting the food trucks in downtown Santa Fe. I quickly learned that they catered more to tourists and many would not let me photograph them. Nevada advised me to spend most of my time on airport road where the manual laborers hung out. I quickly found these food trucks were owned and run by Hispanics who spoke no to very little English and I didn’t speak Spanish. I must say that it was a challenge with the language barrier but I soon learned how willing to help me these folks were. Virtually all of them invited me into their food trucks and they allowed me to photograph them while preparing meals. Soon they were all offering me free food. Here is the series of images I used to tell the story of food truck living over a period of three days.
